Black Friday has been around since the 1960’s, and was simply known as the Friday after Thanksgiving, when the Christmas shopping season officially started.
The name of this particular day didn’t always have a positive meaning, but in modern day it has been turned around to reflect success. You see, historically accountants used black ink to signify profit when recording profits in the company earnings, whilst red ink meant loss. Therefore, Black Friday means profitable Friday to retailing and to the economy, and this is the time of year when most retailers have reached their targets and can therefore afford putting on a big sale.
Even though it’s a historical day, it’s only really in the last 10 years or so that Black Friday has become so immensely popular, which is mostly due to the e-commerce boom.
